Notre Dame vs BC at Fenway: Cuckhold City Preview

Notre Dame is set to play their last “home game” of the season in Fenway Park this weekend as the Shamrock Series moves to Boston. Pres blogged this earlier in the week, and he was right. BC should be ashamed that another school can have a home game in their backyard. I don’t what the Northeast’s deal is. They just can’t get into college football. It’s insane. Anyways, really cool set up at one of America’s sports cathedrals. Notre Dame is dressing like it’s a theme party with these Green Monster jerseys.

Now, personally I think if you’re a team with an all-time classic uniform(ND, Penn State, Alabama, Texas, USC, Michigan, OSU) you really shouldn’t mess with it. However, as far as ND alternates go, this one is pretty good. They just won’t look as good as BC since they’re going with the Flutie Magic throwbacks.

On paper, Notre Dame should win this game easily. The Irish come into Fenway ranked 4th in the country with a 9-1 record. BC is awful. The Eagles are 3-7 and their best win came against Northern Illinois back in September. They’ve averaged 8 points per game in ACC play. Let me say that again. Boston College averages EIGHT points per game against schools in ACC. They were shut out at home by Wake Forest.  The talent gap between Notre Dame and Boston College is as big as the Grand Canyon.   At the time of this blog, Notre Dame is a 15 point favorite in what looks like a cake walk.

With all that said, I’m actually very nervous for this game. Maybe it’s because this is my first real college football memory.

If the Irish look good on paper, Boston College looks good in the Universe. BC is coming off a bye week, it’s Fenway Park, prime time, national TV. You know BC will be ready for this game. It’s an Ultimate Dude game.

Notre Dame on the other hand…this is a trap game for them. It comes a week after Senior Day and Stanford is looming. Classic look ahead game. BC also has the number one ranked defense in the country. All of those games they lost in ACC play with a PUTRID offense…they were actually in all of those games because their defense kept it close. 2 point loss vs Duke, 3 point loss vs Wake Forest, 3 point loss vs Louisville, and played both FSU and Clemson pretty tough. BC is going to be very physical with the Irish. It will probably be their most physical game of the year to date. It will be a split crowd in Fenway. Maybe slightly more Super Fans than Domers. A few big plays by the Eagles defense and/or special teams and all of a sudden they grab momentum. Notre Dame better be ready for a fight.

Then you have all the Flutie Magic stuff. They’re wearing his jerseys that he modeled. He looks like he can still play. He could definitely play for BC. But more than just the jerseys, Flutie had a tough week. Both of his parents died. His dad had been sick and died of a heart attack. Less than an hour later, his mother passed suddenly from a heart attack as well. That’s some shit straight out of The Notebook. You know the final scene of The Notebook(of course you do, tough guys) where the old couple is in bed and the wife asks “Do you think our love can create miracles?” and the husband replies “Yes, I do. I think our love can do anything” ? Well I don’t know anything about Dick and Joan Flutie, but I’m not ruling out their love creating miracles and winning a football game.

In the end, I think Notre Dame finds a way to win this game, but it won’t be pretty. BC is too tough and they have everything from the location, the crowd, and the uniforms, to some universe love miracles on their side. I’m not superstitious, but I am a little stitious. Notre Dame 23, Boston College 16
